Thriller Audiences:
Psychological and Mystery Thrillers - These thrillers tend to be about a character's emotional conflict rather than any physical conflict. Examples include Shutter Island and The Sixth Sense. These films appeal to an older audience, who will be enticed towards a more complicated and intelligent plot. In terms of gender, this genre is fairly neutral and appeals to both fairly equally.
Conspiracy Thrillers- For example, The Da Vinci Code. These are often aimed at an older audience, as they contain element of politics, which may not appeal to a younger viewership. Like psychological thrillers, these are not aimed at a specific gender.
Action Thrillers - Action thrillers tend to be aimed at a younger audience aged , specifically males, as they are advertised towards these groups through trailers containing large amounts of action, which may appeal to females less. However, occasionally females take on the heroic role in films like Tomb Raider and Charlie's Angels which may attract female audience. Examples of action thrillers would be some James Bond films and The Bourne Series.
Crime Thrillers - Crime thrillers tend to be similar to action thrillers they attract a similar audience, but may appeal to slightly older audiences due to age restrictions, which may be due to higher levels of violence. Examples of crime thrillers
include Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, Ocean's 11 and Reservoir Dogs.
In order to appeal more to our audience, I created a short questionnarie and posed it to our target audience, males between 15 and 25. Firstly, I asked them what type of protagonist they wanted, in terms of age and gender. The majority said the sequence would be more appealing if the protagonist was of similar and to them, and as a male. Secondly, I asked what one of the most important aspects of a thriller film wa, to them, giving them a few options. Around half of the candidates said a sense of danger was important to keep the plot interesting and intriguing etc. However, another quarter felt that a build in suspense was more important, with another quarter suggesting the necesity of a twisting plot, to keep the action rolling. Very few commented on the need for a dark location, however we expecct to incorporate this into our extract anyway.
